I made my first batch of ice cream last night. Vanilla with Chocolate Chunks.
Taste: B-plus
Texture: D
I think my mistake was to use low fat milk. I never buy whole milk and I didn't want to buy it just for this experiment. There are too many little ice crystals and it isn't creamy enough. It tastes pretty good, but could have used a little bit more vanilla.
I think I churned it long enough. I cranked it every 15 minutes for over 2 hours.
I'll still eat it.

DO you think you can make the texture better with whole milk? Nice experiment.
Ah, the cream factor is HUGE for making ice cream smooth and creamy. Water just can't pull it off like cream can!
It LOOKS good, though;)
yum.
The more you talk about homemade ice cream, the more I keep thinking I have to try this.
When you perfect the technique and recipe, be sure to let me know and then I'll try it!
I'm with Green Girl -- you HAVE to use cream!
Yep. More fat needed. There's another kind of ice cream too - with a custard base. K makes it...with egg.
Grab yourself the Ben and Jerry's ice cream cookbook - the library probably has it and it's good!
We have one of those balls that you kick around to make the ice cream. It is generally fun for the first 8 minutes. Then the chilldren abandon us for much more interesting pursuits. Like watching the grass grow.
