Photos: Mom's Museum of the Sixties

The munchkin on the right is me, taken around 1960. When I visit Mom, I find lots of things in her house that belong in a Museum of the Sixties. I didn't take pictures of all the bottles of expired medication that I threw away. I didn't want her to catch me tossing them in the trash.

I also didn't take a picture of the little tin full of rubber bands that turned into a pile of yellow dust when I touched them. I did manage to snap a few pics of the other exhibits while Mom was napping.
Ceramics class. 1966.Piggybank. To commemorate the birth of my youngest brother.

A drawer full of staples. Boxes that have never been opened. 90 cents a box.

Mom played trumpet in high school and also in the town band where I grew up.
The trumpet has been passed down to my nephew, but she has a drawer full of sheet music from the 1930's to the 1970's. The paper is yellow and brittle and the songs have long been forgotten.

Oooh, the oldest things in the house. The GOOD GLASSES! The ones with the metallic fish and the silver rims. A wedding gift from 1956. Never to be used by the children. Only taken out of the cupboard when Dad's National Guard or high school buddies were in town and came for a visit. Dad would ask..."Beer or Highball?"

Mom has been putting these torture devices in her hair for decades.

At one time, Mom used this for everything. Bug bites, bruises, sunburn, poison ivy. I found this in the garage. I'm not sure what she's using it for these days.

I saved the best for last. THE MODERN MEDICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA. 1965.
I spent a rainy afternoon reading some of the entries. It deserves it's own blog.
Any day now.

I bet some of that stuff is worth something!!!

I snagged all of my grandparents' drinking paraphenalia. Back then people DID ask--and DID drink all kinds of stuff, didn't they? I have some cool swizzle sticks and glasses of all sizes and even a couple martini shakers. Shame that I don't really drink cocktails...

And one day, you get to clean all that stuff out and deal with it.

Are those the hair rollers with the prickly, bristly things inside? OMG, those WERE torture devices! Remember trying to sleep with those things skewered all over your head? *shudder*

I love Witch Hazel--best, cheapest astringent out there.

What is it about people as they get older that they just stop updating?

Okay, so I just learned about your very entertaining blog from MR SS TODAY.

Hysterical. Absolutely hysterical. She still has all this stuff AFTER she sold your childhood home? Makes you wonder what (if anything) hit the dumpster!

I have missed chatting with you and CLEARLY need to figure out when to call you or be called by you. Is #1 living with a GIRL? Am I reading this correctly? A girlfriend-girlfriend, or a platonic girlfriend??!?! (I feel so old).

When gas prices hit $4, E & I started carpooling. It seems rude to make outbound calls... although I do answer inbound calls... Between kids, work, their homework, my homework, drive time is the only talk time.

Let me know your schedule!
